Maplethorpe - Location

Maplethorpe Portraits - Image Bank

Robert Maplethorpe's work focusses heavily on portraiture and his compositions are extremely effective, he always manages to fill the frame effectively. Also the majority of his work is created in black and white and is very tonal. Also many, if not all, of his work is very simplistic and he uses very plain light or dark backgrounds to allow the figures to stand out. His work are very iconic as they explore the society in which he spent his childhood in.

Back of Head - Image Bank

Back of head photography focusses largely on the composition itself and where/how you position the head in the frame. Also background is significant in this topic as when using detailed background, for example on a location shoot, the background can be blurred by focussing on the head. Plain backgrounds are also equally effective as it allows the head to stand out. When photographing someone with long hair people either do a closer shot which cuts off the air or they include all the hair in the frame which can look quite effective.

In the two photographs above, plain white backgrounds have been used to enhance the detail on the back of the head of the subject. It also allows the object to stand out more as minimal attention will be payed to the background.

In this case the background has been blurred in order to imply a sense of depth and also to enhance the focus and detail to the subject. Despite the background being rather detailed itself, the fact that it is blurred allows the focal point to be the back of the head of the subject.

In this photograph a black background has been used amplify the shape and detail of the figure. This contrasts with the lightness of the figure and therefore allows it to stand out.

Multiple Imagery - Image Bank

Multiple imagery, as shown below, can be of one specific object which many photographs from different angles, zooms, features and different parts of the object; similar to a photo joiner. It can also be of he same object from the same angle but at different locations. Multiple imagery can be made of of completely different pictures being put together.

In this multiple imagery, photos have been taken of the different aspects of the same object being a clock. The same zooms have been used but just at different angles to explore the different parts of the object.

Here, photographs have been taken of the same object but from different angles such as more side on angles. Also the mouth is captured making different expressions showing its teeth, tongue and being open and shut.
