Connecting Essay 2

This is a composition consisting of two separate photographs which are both of two opposite sides of a woman's face. A tare effect is used down the middle of the page to clearly separate these two images. It also distinguishes the very different expressions on the woman's face and emphasises the contrast displayed between them. The image on the left shows the woman frowning implying a negative emotion such as sadness. Whereas the photograph on the right is of the women smiling which conveys emotions of happiness; demonstrating two opposing emotions and therefore creating contrast.This contrast is further enhanced due to editing of both images. They have been 

altered to display the emotions more effectively and make the contrast more visible. The 

image on the left is darker and looks cold which enhanced the emotion of sadness. 

Whereas the other photograph is very bright and glowing which specifies the emotion of 

happiness shown. The backgrounds are also of different colours which once again 

contribute to the contrast of emotions created.

 

This photograph is one which I have taken. It contains two figures which are positioned 

either side of the centre where only half of their faces are visible. They are standing in front of a brick was which acts as a neutral coloured background. For this piece I intended to

create an outcome which relates to the topic of contrast. I deem this piece as successful as it illustrates a contrast of emotions between the two people. The figure on the left is smiling which portrays the impression that she is happy. The figure on the right shows no emotion and can result in many interpretations of his emotions but they still oppose the emotion of 

happiness. Another contrast visible in this photograph is the difference between the length 

of hair of the two figures where the one on the left has long hair and the one on the right has short hair.

These two photographs have a couple of similarities. One of those similarities is that both of them have alike outcomes which relate heavily to the contrast of emotions where two figures express different opposing emotions. The both show similar emotions as well where one 

figure is smiling and the other is frowning or straight faced. Another aspect of these two 

images which show a connection is that they both include only half faces which work 

extremely effectively in the first image and contribute to the contrasts made successfully.
