How Tone could be described:
Shades
Shadows
Highlights
Blend
Contrast
Dark
Light
Bright
My own definition - The tone of something is where a variety of shades are visible whether it be in black and white or one colour.
This image of some flowers is very effective in showing tone, this is because their are many highlighted areas on each flower and it also is evident where the light source is coming from. Also because the source of light is at an angle, shadows from one flower can be made onto anther and leaving one flower completely in the shade. Many different shades of grey are present which add to the effect of tone.

In this picture of some leaves tone is also very effective. A sepia effect has been acquired to the picture allowing a variety of shades of brown to be seen. The speckles of water on the leaves also add highlight areas as well as shadow areas. The water is also give a black outline to define the shape of it. A black background is used to add depth to the image and makes the leaves stand out.
This picture is in black and white which enhances all the different types of shades in the picture. Two bright strips of white run down the middle of the composition in the road which are in contrast to the other dark shades. Also a bright white haze is in the distance which represents the mist in the picture.
This picture also has a sepia effect on it and is displayed by all the different shades of brown. White is also a big park in this piece as it represents the light. Black and dark brown are also a big feature as they illustrate the shape of the cave and rocks.
