My own definition - a variety of marks which can separate areas or add detail.

This picture of an eye demonstrates how lines can add extreme amounts of detail. There are countless thin lines which run outwards from the pupil. Also there is a line in the shape of a circle which separates the colours. Separating black from blue.
This image of planks of wood relate to the topic 'lines' very effectively as lines run down the plank of wood showing the detail and representing age. Also two thick lines run either side of the plank which separate each individual plank.
This photo of a metal fence show many lines which interlink with each other to form a fence. This shows the structure of the fence which can also relate to another formal element, 'structure'.
Finally, this image of stairs is very effective. Each horizontal line represents the steps of the stairs. Also there is one continuous line which is connected to the horizontal lines by thin vertical line forming what we know as stairs. The shadow is made up of the similar lines which begin to elongate towards the bottom and this looks very effective
