Definition of Pattern:
1. A repeated decorative design
2. A regular and intelligible form or sequence discernible in the way in which something happens or is done.

My own definition - continuous detail of an object which contains a specific structure
These images show how pattern can be viewed in several different ways, all of these pictures are of natural objects which shows how pattern doesn't have to be forced it just occurs naturally. Both pictures 1 and 4 display a continuous pattern very effectively by covering up the frame with the same detail.
